Reverend Father Charles Igechi of the Benin Archdiocese was allegedly shot dead in Benin City, Edo State, by unknown gunmen.

According to reports, the priest was shot by unknown gunmen on his way to work on Wednesday along the Agbor Road in Benin's Ikhueniro district.

A Reverend Father in the Benin Archdiocese, who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to talk on the event, confirmed the priest's death to Daily Trust.

He stated that, “It is true he was killed. No body was with him when he was killed by gunmen.”

Attempts to reach the Edo State Command spokesperson, Chidi Nwanbuzor, were futile because calls and text messages to his cell phone went unanswered.

However, the Catholic Archbishop of Benin City, Augustine Akubeze, stated that the matter had been reported to the police and expressed hope that the perpetrators of the illicit conduct would face punishment.

In a condolence statement issued on Thursday, Akubeze stated that the priest, who was ordained in August 2022, was shot in the back.
