A boat tragedy at Egbu village in Kwara state's Patigi local government area is said to have killed about 100 people, including a father and his four children.
Meanwhile, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has expressed his condolences to the people of Patigi following the terrible news of a boat tragedy in which scores of people are believed to have died and many others are still missing.
The tragedy occurred on Monday, while the deceased was returning from a marriage ceremony in neighboring Egboti village in Niger State.
It was also said that river waves took the boat and hit a tree, causing the boat to capsize and killing many persons.
The entire Egboti community is in grief, since no less than 50 bodies have been found from the disaster.
According to community sources, the dead had traveled from Kpada village to Egboti village to participate in a wedding ceremony.
According to sources, the boat was carrying approximately 300 persons on its way back from the wedding venue when it capsized in Egbu village.
According to those who provided details about the incident, 69 individuals died in Egbu village, 36 in Gakpan village, and four in Kpada village in the state's Patigi local government region.
The governor's Chief Press Secretary Rafiu Ajakaye issued a statement on the condoms that reads, "The Governor is saddened to receive reports of the boat accident involving several people, particularly residents of Ebu, Dzakan, Kpada, Kuchalu, and Sampi — all in Patigi," according to a government statement on Tuesday.
“The Governor sends his heartfelt condolences to the people of these communities and those from other states. He prays to Almighty Allah to repose the souls of the victims.
“The Governor, meanwhile, continues to monitor the rescue efforts already mounted since Monday night in search of possible survivors. He commends the alertness of the Etsu Patigi His Royal Highness Alhaji Ibrahim Umar Bologi II and other local government authorities for the efforts to save as many people as possible who may have survived the mishap.”
