Angry mobs kill butcher in Sokoto over alleged and unverified blasphemy

The Sokoto State Police Command has confirmed the murder of Usman Buda, a butcher, who was allegedly killed over accusations of blasphemy. 

ASP Ahmad Rufa’i, the command's Public Relations Officer, issued a statement on Sunday confirming the incident. 

The police received a distress call at 9:20 am reporting that Usman Buda, a butcher at Sokoto Abattoir from Gwandu Local Government Area, had been accused of blaspheming the Holy Prophet (S.A.W) and was at risk of being lynched by a mob.

Upon receiving this information, the Commissioner of Police, along with the Area Commander Metro and the DPO Kwanni, immediately led a team of policemen and other operational commanders to the scene. As soon as the mob saw the police, they scattered, leaving the victim unconscious.

Despite being rescued and rushed to the Usmanu Danfodio University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) for medical attention, Usman Buda was later pronounced dead. 

The police have stated that they are currently conducting an investigation to apprehend the perpetrators of this crime and bring them to justice.
